Artist Statement
Kyle Boggild is an Ontario-based artist whose paintings are rooted in canoe travel and the landscapes of Ontario’s backcountry.
Boggild’s paintings begin with specific landscapes encountered during wilderness travel, but move beyond straightforward representation. Rock, water, forest, and sky are distilled into rhythmic forms and patterns that reflect both the physical character of a place and the experience of being there. Through simplification, colour, and design, familiar terrain is transformed into a personal interpretation while remaining connected to the landscape itself.
Years spent travelling remote rivers and lakes, working outdoors, and exploring Ontario’s backcountry have fostered a deep connection to the province’s wilderness landscapes. Those experiences inform both the subject matter and the visual language of the work. Through bold colour, flattened space, and deliberate simplification, Boggild seeks to capture not only how a landscape appears, but how it feels to move through it.
His paintings invite viewers to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with their own experiences of the natural world.
Biography
Kyle Boggild is a contemporary Canadian landscape painter based in Carrying Place, Ontario. Working primarily in acrylic he creates contemporary wilderness paintings inspired by experiences exploring the rugged terrain of the Canadian Shield landscape.
Having lived in Nova Scotia, Yukon, British Columbia, and Ontario, and growing up in Ottawa, Boggild has spent much of his life exploring Canada’s diverse landscapes. His work draws from extensive travel through wilderness areas by canoe, on foot, and through professional experience in remote environments. These firsthand experiences form the foundation of his paintings, which are rooted in specific places while emphasizing atmosphere, and a strong sense of connection to the land.
Through a stylized visual language of contour, rhythm, and colour, Boggild seeks to capture both the physical character and emotional resonance of the Canadian wilderness. He currently maintains a studio practice in Ontario.
